Eleonora and Joshua were married last Sunday (24th June) at the Finnish Lutheran church where her dad has been pastor for many years. Church was actually cancelled for the wedding! Needless to say, the wedding was a momentous occasion for the community, so many of whom are like family to the bride. Eleonora’s father, Pastor Joensuu was standing at the front of the church ready to marry the couple– I thought Eleonora’s solo walk down the aisle was perhaps the most powerful walk I’d ever seen. The rings were slid along two ribbons held by young women in traditional Finnish attire from the back of the church, passed along by members of the congregation to the front. After the ceremony the bride and groom released a dozen butterflies at the front of the church, and we had bright sun for a while, till we arrived at our photo locations. We had some rain, but I hope you’ll agree that the dramatic clouds were well worth it. I was so excited about the clouds that I kept Eleonora and Joshua out on the rocks till it started pouring rain, but they were good sports about it. I think Eleonora shares my passion for dark skies and so she was willing ( ; I thought the locations and conditions were not only suitable for a bride of northern European extraction but also for the groom, who is near to completing his Phd in Philosophy at U of T. Good scouting, Eleonora! Once back at the reception the bride and groom were serenaded in Finnish by the church choir and a quartet. There was a delicious seafood buffet, and some effort was put into explaining to Joshua what it means to be a Finn, newly adopted as he was. Anyway, I thought it was a brilliant wedding of two very interesting people and I’m sorry in a way that they’re going to be back east for some time. If anyone cares to add some details I missed or give more explanation, I’d love for you to do so.
