Yesterday my little niece came for a visit. She is almost one. We had cake. More on the cake later! A little on the clean-up for now.

philippines May 7th

My first few hours in the Philippines and I was in the back of a pickup truck driving up a mountain to eat my first raw coconut. Pretty great.
These two weeks (especially Aug 29-Sept7th) are my absolute busiest so I’m just posting a little something till I’m back at my desk and editing hard as of Sept. 8th.

Kathleen & Kevin engagement shoot

August, and the first engagement session of the year!? I know. I must confess that I actively avoid engagement sessions. Yes they’re great for getting to know people, yes they can be fun and provide some great images for the reception, but they make me extremely nervous! The funny thing is that I’m not nervous about wedding-day shooting—I am used to working under pressure and when it comes around to the portrait session it just sort of flows as part of the day, generally—couples are elevated and in the rhythm of things, and I work with that. An engagement session however is just that portrait session all on its own and I confess I struggle with getting people in the ‘groove’ when all we did is drive to a certain location, get out of the car and say hi. I am pleased, however, that working with Kathleen and Kevin in all sorts of scratchy grass, hay and bugs, I got over the fear of my dreaded first e-shoot of the season and got some decent images to boot. ( : Whew! I am very much looking forward to their September wedding and I think all of us will be more relaxed—odd as that may seem. Thanks to Jules and Amish for throwing hay, holding flashes and filming!

Veronika & Steve

I first met Veronika and Steve about a year ago when Veronika and I were neophytes in what Steve’s friends refer to as ‘that illegal gym’ Crossfit Vancouver. I would stand in awe of Steve (aka ‘Manchild’—the really good people have code names) but Veronika and I were close in friendly competition for a few months until she left me in the dust—but for hanging on the chin-up bars…but for that. It was great to get to know them a little before the wedding so that we could intuit that they would appreciate a little action in their portrait shoot in addition to catching some pretty light in their bright eyes. The shot of Steve hoisting his bride on his shoulders, for example, is actually the top of a back squat sequence. The wheel barrow shots are after barreling down the highway—they are repose. Steve is unwinding before the ceremony by throwing one rock in the air and then exploding it mid air with a subsequent rock. Now for a small sampling of images:

I love the expressions and reactions from the head table!

Kudos to whomever made this incredible cake. THE best cake.

Favours were home made jams with the couple’s new address on the tag. I liked how the guests pitched in and put the tables away when it was time to dance.

Carly & Steve

It has been very difficult to know exactly what to post from Carly and Steve’s incredible June wedding at the UBC Boathouse, so I am posting a link to their slideshow here.

They are both creative and gorgeous people—who were willing to climb steep embankments and ladders on our portrait session, making me both very happy and very nervous. Wherever we went they just seemed to see what I was seeing and jumped into the scene—or onto the ladder! I don’t recommend that everyone try this—Carly for one has actual trapeze training, and I think Steve must have done stunt work at some point, judging from his visit to the photobooth we set up during the reception! It was lots of fun shooting with friend Amish Solanki who usually shoots stills but was in this case flexing his cinematographic (is that a word?) muscles –and thanks go to his wife Natisha who found us shooting in the hot field and brought us all bottles of water!! Please check out the list of Carly and Steve’s fabulous vendors at the bottom of this post, and again, their slideshow for more photos.
