rachel & blair wedding

Rachel and Blair love winter. And I believe them. I shot many warm photos of them in the snow, and cuddling in the icy draughts of a train. Despite our differing seasonal tastes, I loved their winter-themed-celebration, and Rachel, whom I met as a bride’s maid at Desirée and Jim’s wedding in 2007, looked the perfect ice-queen. The remarkable cake which depicts Rachel and their cats and Blair on his snowmobile was crafted by Luscious Creations. Their ceremony and reception was held at Whonnock Lake, which is a lovely building with vaulted ceilings and skylights, in the quiet woods near a lake. It may be in Abbotsford. The décor was provided by Bobi’s Wedding Warehouse, and Rev. Brent Sheppard officiated. We’ll start with some preparation shots, which are some of my best getting ready images ever thanks to a slow lace-up process and some strong light coming through a window!

dayna et Jeff avec enfant

One of the perks of a long UBC education is knowing some clean places you can take people wearing very little clothing and not be seen. I think my graduating paper on religious tree symbolism (including tree goddesses!) may be coming to the fore here, in some images. My apologies to Dayna’s husband Jeff for sending him out to strip branches from blossoming trees in front of all the sensitive tourists who were photographing them! You beauty-killer, Jeff!

jolie & arka

Here are some candid shots of some of the wonderfully expressive faces at my step-sister Jolie’s wedding last December! I love the vintage hairstyles she chose, along with the feather head pieces and feather boutonnieres by local designer, a Farmer’s Daughter! Everyone prepped at the Wall Center and walked across the street to St. Andrew’s-Wesley for the ceremony in the side chapel. The reception was at Brock House.

Arka and Jolie’s son Nicholas was the ring bearer—or bear in this case!

A cautionary image: the church was decorated with lilies the night before, but they did not hold up!

My mum’s wonderful new husband, Patrick and his daughter.

(Here comes the sun)…It’s been a long, cold, lonely winter…

Greetings blog friends! As of last night at about 9:30 pm, since I emailed my last paper off to a prof in Holland, I am no longer in grad school. I have been a full time student since, oh, I think 1984, so this is a particularly sweet moment. I have been sitting in bed 12 hrs a day, most days, cramming for comprehensive exams and expanding graduating papers for this final push since Jan 15th. Last night, however, I stayed up till 1 am reading a novel, (a novel! No note taking involved!) Wild Swans, for my upcoming trip to Beijing. This morning I was in a cleaning frenzy until at 9:30 I had all four wisdom teeth extracted. I must say, after a few intensely bloody moments upon arriving home, it’s not as bad as it looks. The experience has been a cakewalk compared to my adult tonsillectomy—that much is certain.

In any event, I promise these will be the last unflattering photos of me and my bloodied bits in a very long time, since this year is going to be wonderful—lots of travel and bunch of incredible weddings are lined up. I have two weddings to post even now, so finer faces will soon appear!

It’s great to be back.
